Can chiropractic help headaches?

Can Chiropractic help headaches and migraines? Chiropractors have been successfully treating headaches and migraine headache for years. Before any treatment is administered the first step is to determine which type of headache you are experiencing. This is done through a detailed, chiropractic, musculoskeletal evaluation. Once the root cause is found, we begin correcting the issue through specific chiropractic manipulation rather than masking the symptoms through medication. These manipulations are extremely gentle and patients often feel instant improvement.

What are the different types of headaches

  •  Tension Headaches
  • Cervicogenic Headaches
  • Migraine Headaches
  • Cluster Headaches
  • Life threatening headaches: very rare

   1. Tension headache

-Most common type. Typically band like pressure around head. Can be on one side or both sides of the head.  Increases in pain as the day progresses.  Caused by stress, anxiety, depression.  Treated with Chiropractic manipulation, over the counter pain pills.

   2. Cervicogenic headache

-Caused by strain / sprain of cervical musculature or joints. Referred pain from neck into skull. Tested by eliciting pain in neck, causing pain in head. Treated with Chiropractic manipulation , over the counter pain pills, cervical stretches / exercises

   3.  Migraine headache

-Caused by irritation of cervical / skull vasculature. Often throbbing / pounding type pain. Can be on both sides of head or one side, often behind the eye/eyes. Nausea often accompanies it.  Bright lights, loud noise, alcohol, caffeine increases pain.  Treated with Chiropractic manipulation, pain pills, rest in dark, isolated room,  magnesium supplementation (Females 300 – 360 mg, males 400 – 420mg per day)

What are life threatening headaches?

Life threatening headaches: very rare

             a. Meningitis

-Infection of the meningies (the protective sack around the spinal cord). Symptoms include headache, increase in head pain with forward flexion of neck, fever, pain tends to diminish as day progresses.

             b. Space occupying lesion

-Worst head pain you’ve ever felt. Increase in cephalic pressure due to fluid or other substance taking up space in head. Includes tumor and trauma. Pain tends to diminish as day progresses.
